INTER-CLUB GALAS

As a club, we are invited to compete at various team galas. Normally, the competition is between 6-8 teams, depending on the size of the pool.
These galas are ran at various levels of competition, so allowing all abilities to have their opportunity to represent their club. As we are a competitive club, our aim is to win, so we will pick our strongest team possible at each level. However, we do try to ensure everyone gets the chance, so we compete in as many of these events as possible.

LEAGUE GALAS

FDSC takes part in 3 leagues: The Chiltern League; the Milton Keynes and District Junior League; and the West Midlands Division of the National Arena League.
The Chiltern League is ranked as a C-Grade event with ‘no faster than’ time limits, which ensures that we don’t select swimmers who are too fast in the relevant events.
The Junior League and the National Arena League are both very competitive, and we select our best available team for each gala. The Junior League aims to promote and develop competition team swimming in children between the ages of 9 and 12 years.
All 3 leagues are ran over 3 separate galas, with points accumulating to give the final positions at the end.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

These are ran over 2 separate weekends, normally in November. Every member is allowed to compete, and encouraged to enter as many events as possible, subject to the Head Coach’s discretion. This enables the club to build up as complete a record of pb’s as possible for every swimmer. It is important for the swimmer to take part in all events as, very often, they will be surprised to find that they are swimming far better in a stroke and/or in a distance that they had previously thought would not suit them. This is particularly essential for the younger and less experienced members.
Presently, our Club Championships are licensed at ASA Level 4. Times set here will be recorded on the ASA National Rankings.

OPEN MEETS

As the name suggests, these events are open to all members, although subject to age restrictions and qualifying times. Open meets are licensed at various levels; 1 to 4, which should give everyone the opportunity to enter. Times recorded at Licensed meets, including Club Championships are used to compile the ASA National Rankings.

FDSC will always provide poolside coaching at Open Meets if they are part of the club’s annual competition structure.
The following give information relating to the levels of Open Meets set by the ASA:

LEVEL 4

Open Meets which are not L 1, 2 or3, and events meeting the ASA criteria for a Low Level Competition which are:
*A single club competition restricted to its members ( e.g. Club Championships), or
*Inter-club competitions with no more than 8 clubs, run as a single event.
Purpose: For the development of inexperienced swimmers. Times recorded are suitable for entry into County Championships, and Meets at L3.
Times not eligible for entry into Regional or National events.

LEVEL 2

SUMMARY

INTER-CLUB/LEAGUE GALAS: swimmers are selected to represent FDSC. These galas are run at various levels of competition and will have time-restrictions on swimming events so that the opportunity can be given to all swimmers to represent their club. Inter-club galas are one-off, whereas league galas are over 3 rounds.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS: restricted to FDSC members. Members are encouraged to enter all events, subject to Head Coach’s discretion. ASA L4 Meet, so times will be recorded on the National Rankings and are eligible for entry into L3 Open Meets and County Championships.

OPEN MEETS: Criteria set by the ASA as levels 1 ,2, 3 and 4, as above.

N.B.- County, Regional and National Championships will have ‘qualifying windows’, and must have entry times recorded on the ASA National Rankings ( except 10year old entry times for the Bedfordshire County Championships).
e.g. For entry into the Bedfordshire County Championships 2016, times must be recorded on the National Rankings from events between January 2015 and the closing date ( not yet decided but usually approx.. 4 weeks before the 1st weekend of competition ; 30/31 January 2016)

It is important, therefore, to look at the club’s fixture list and plan to enter regular Licensed Open Meets which will give sufficient opportunity to set eligible and recordable times. Swimmers can only progress if they have regular targets and goals to aim for, and it is very frustrating for them if they swim what they believe to be a County qualification time at a league or inter-club gala, only to find that it has not been set at a Licensed meet.
